USA Today has posted as editorial warning of "a service" being offered by Banks in the U.S.: They charge you an overdraft fee of as much as $34 for each purchase you make on your debit card when you are overdrawn. Some banks have apparently taken steps to ensure that they rip people off as much as possible with these fees.
The best thing to do about this is to call your bank and make sure that they decline any purchases that you try to make when your account is overdrawn (perhaps after your line of credit is exhausted.) If you allow them to hit you with these fees they can charge you $30+ for the newspaper you bought at the corner store and another $30+ for the coffee you get at the coffee shop a few minutes later. One bank recently raised the limit on such charges from five times per day to seven - so they can hit you for over $200 just for letting you use the money that you probably have in another account!
If you don't already use Internet or Telephone banking you might want to look into it. It's an easy way to check your balance and transfer funds between accounts without having to visit the bank. Another good idea is to switch to your credit card for small purchases if you forget the balances in the accounts linked to your debit card.
