2001/2002 - Consultation Papers

In 2001 the Government of Canada held wide public consultations concerning changes to Canadian Copyright laws. Over 700 position papers were submitted by Canadians from coast to coast - overwhelmingly rejecting legal protection for digital restrictions and other ideas that have since been incorporated into the proposed legislation.

Easy money: Overdraft Fees!

USA Today has posted as editorial warning of "a service" being offered by Banks in the U.S.: They charge you an overdraft fee of as much as $34 for each purchase you make on your debit card when you are overdrawn. Some banks have apparently taken steps to ensure that they rip people off as much as possible with these fees.

Social Kissing?

A few years back I attended an office party and found a couple of young men guarding the front door. They acted like a funnel - grabbing each young woman as she passed through the door. Before the the woman knew what was happening, she was given a welcoming "social kiss" that involved inspecting her tonsils with their tongues.

Ella Shepherd/Marchildon, a mother of 5 children here in Montreal, has contracted a rare form of cancer. Doctors advised Mrs. Marchildon to seek treatment at a specialized clinic in Washington D.C. A recent application to the RAMQ for financial support and authorization for treatment has been refused. The authorization process continues, but the family now needs financial help from the community, estimated at roughly $60,000, so that treatments can begin.
